Dana 35 gear oil capacity.
Hello, so trying to decide what gear oil to put in my old dana 60 rear diff and there are some variables. It's a full float axle so the gear lube also lubricates the rear wheel bearings. It's from a 1975 w200 so I don't know if it has a limited slip differential or needs a modifier but could be wrong? I live in a climate of wide temperature ranges.

My HPD30 only took 1.5 Quarts before it spilled out of the fill hole. I have a UCF Cover. It seems low, but there are no strait answers on here. It has 4.88 gears.

I scoured the web for "the best differential fluid" and "top XJ differential fluid recommendations". In the end, I found that just about any 75W-90 GL5 gear oil will do. Since I was in the process of ordering Redline fluids for my transmission and transfer case, I decided to go with Red Line 57905 75W90 GL-5 Gear Oil. As for diff heat buildup, I'm a firm believer of adding a quality finned cast aluminum cover. Besides adding about 25% more oil capacity and having a convenient drain plug, they do a super job of dissipating heat.Just make sure you park level and fill it up until it is level with the fill hole. You did it right. The Dana 300 takes a GL5 rated gear oil, same as the diffs. No additives needed. The transmission however takes a GL4 rated gear oil or synchromesh fluid. A gl5 rated oil has too much sulfur in it which affects the synchromesh parts. Mike.Typically GL5 75W-90 or 75W-140 (heavy duty use) gear oil. If you have a limited slip diff you may need the friction modifier additive depending on the gear oil. The label should say if it is needed.
