I eventually get the "bg3.exe is not responding" message, and the game eventually closes itself if I do not manually choose the option to do so.

Its not an issue. The correct place of the ImprovedUI + Assets mods is INSIDE of override. I'm using the hexblade subclass mod and it requires the Improved UI Assets but, unlike all other mods that override game files, I can't ignore the override warning and can't add it to the active mods hierarchy.
